South African Council for English Education (SACEE) is an NPO that in 2025 celebrated 70 years of service to schools and learners, supporting learners to enjoy communicating and expressing themselves in the English language, whether as a home language or second (or fifth!) language.
We run a number of competitions such as the annual English Olympiad (run by the Eastern Cape branch), the Language Challenge (run by the Border Branch), the Spellcheck Competition, the Public Speaking Competitions and Forum Discussions (run by the Western Cape branch).
As one of its flagship projects, SACEE also publishes an annual anthology, English Alive, of the best creative writing from learners in schools across South/ern Africa. 2025 marks the 60th edition of this publication.
