Aaron Posner’s Stupid Fucking Bird is a bold and darkly funny reimagining of Chekhov’s The Seagull, which deals with humans’ timeless obsessions with fame, love and the search for meaning. Con, a young playwright desperate to change the world through art, battles the shadow of his famous mother, Emma, whose lover Trigorin, becomes the irresistible focus of Nina’s ambition. Around them spirals a web of unrequited longing and frustrated desire.
At its heart, the play explores the fierce clash between commercial theatre - fuelled by celebrity and entertainment - and a newer, urgent theatre that wants to challenge, provoke and ignite change. Everyone wants something - or someone - they can’t have.
Directed by Swedish director, Maria Weisby, the play blends comedy and heartbreak, as it reveals how fame seduces, how love confuses and how far humans will go to feel seen and valued. It’s a story about ambition, connection and the universal need to be loved.
Featuring The Baxter's Fires Burning Company: Awethu Hleli, Carlo Daniels, Lyle October, Nolufefe Ntshuntshe, Tamzin Daniels alongside Lwanda Sindaphi & Nirel Sithole.
