Standard Bank Young Artists for Theatre 2022, Billy Langa and Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, the Theatre Duo, collaborates with The Baxter’s Fires Burning company, for this striking debut production, of Loss, handle with care, which also launches Fires Burning as The Baxter’s new resident company.
This equally physical and metaphysically probing, investigates and challenges the continued possession and exhibition of stolen African artefacts in Western public institutions abroad, and serves as a metaphor to revive the conversation around intentional restitution. of Loss – handle with care not only poses questions around this unjustly paraded theft and the deep generational grief that it has struck, but also encourages that the mirror is tilted inwards and seeks answers to, “what is it that I have lost?”. They have created a provocative stylistic language through the radical merging of ethereal movement and transporting text and sonics, allowing us to journey through and interrogate this ancient and yet also extremely current human issue of dispossession, discount and disregard, all in the arguably counterproductive pursuit of Western ‘art’ and collective and thus, personal recovery and discovery.
