Vision Statement

The Baxter Masterclasses aim to inspire, equip and empower the next generation of South African theatre-makers by connecting emerging and established practitioners with leading voices and expertise from across the creative sector.

Rooted in the Baxter’s commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, access and the development of South African talent, the Masterclasses aspire to cultivate a supportive environment where participants feel encouraged to explore, question, collaborate and grow.

We hope participants leave inspired to continue their creative development beyond the Masterclass and contribute meaningfully to the future of the performing arts and broader creative industries.

This three part masterclass aims to provide an introduction to scenography for theatre production. The course will explore the methods and processes to create the visual identity of a live performance from its conception to its opening. The series of steps taken to develop the visual world of a production and how it manifests within the physical stage environment through the implementation of the different core design elements of set design, lighting design, projection and costume design, drives the linear progression of each of the sessions. Attendees will attain exposure to the skills and available tools within theatre design practices to motivate and create cohesive visual design languages for live performance in theatre.
