An Unromantic Comedy is a fresh, side-splitting exploration of modern relationships gone awry. When Tony accidentally invites his ex-fiancée, Rachel, to a romantic dinner for two, awkwardness erupts into full-blown chaos—especially when Rachel’s ex-best friend arrives. The result? A comedic whirlwind of exposed secrets, simmering resentments, and surprising confessions.
Written by Rosalind Butler, whose witty, incisive scripts have entertained South African TV audiences for years, and directed by Craig Freimond, the mastermind behind stage hits and celebrated local films, this new production will have you laughing one moment and questioning relationship norms the next. Are we truly ready for commitment? Is marriage outdated? Does the “sisterhood code” actually exist? Through rapid-fire dialogue and relatable characters, the play invites you to confront the messy and often hilarious realities of modern love.
This limited run at the Baxter Studio features the dynamic Baxter Fires Burning Company actors—Lyle October, Tamzin Williams, and Awethu Hleli—bringing fresh energy to the stage. An Unromantic Comedy is a playful, unfiltered look at the complexities of thirty-something living, guaranteed to strike a chord with anyone who’s ever been in (or out of) love.
