Commission Continua is another striking theatrical offering by Phala Ookeditse Phala & Bonani Tony Miyambo. At the heart of this production is South African society’s struggle for real change and reconciliation.
Paper doesn’t blush and mountains of paper seem to be an essential upshot of the numerous investigation commissions that have existed, and still exist, in South Africa. Thirty years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Commission Continua asks a simple, unsettling question: what has changed?
South Africa has produced mountains of reports in its pursuit of justice. Affidavits. Submissions. Addendums. Final reports. Paper that records truth with meticulous care. Paper that does not blush. But does it move anything?
Or does it sit, archived and inert, while the country remains locked in a cycle of inquiry without consequence?
Commission Continua threads together the language and architecture of these commissions, exposing the gap between documentation and lived reality.
At its centre is Bright Maluleke, played by award winning actor Tony Bonani Miyambo, a records clerk tasked with copying and archiving the nation’s truth. He tries to remain neutral, to do the job and not read too deeply. But the weight of what passes through his hands becomes impossible to ignore.
In a stripped-down world of a photocopier, a microphone, and a loop station, Bright confronts the endless “paper jam” — a system stalled, a country caught in repetition, a crisis that refuses resolution.
